5 Cleaning Industry Trends To Watch in 2024

2023-11-01

The cleaning industry provides a solid business opportunity for people ready to leave corporate America and pursue the dream of earning long-term success as entrepreneurs. While this industry already has a solid base, here are five trends that will propel further growth for the future.

Factors Impacting the Cleaning Services Industry

The cleaning industry trends that will drive business in the future are consistent factors that contribute to improving the economy overall.

1. Dual-Income Households

For 2023 to 2030, the global residential cleaning services market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% . Factors driving this growth include the increasing number of dual-income households, a growing awareness of cleanliness, and rising disposable incomes.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, dual-income households reflect the cultural shift toward women in the workforce and have made up the household majority for at least 20 years. Even among households with children, 66% are dual-income.

2. Rising Disposable Income

Rising disposable income (money left over after taxes) has been a rising trend since the 1960s. The average for 2023 was 5.3% higher than it was over the past decade. When people have more money at their disposal, they prioritize spending that improves their quality of life, including work from the cleaning industry.

3. Improving Quality of Life

Higher disposable income allows people to invest in measures that reduce stress and increase convenience. The U.S. Department of Commerce predicts that 80% of households will use housecleaning services by 2024, providing a 20% growth for businesses in this industry.

4. Aging Population

Important cleaning industry trends are found in all ages of the population, however the older generations are the ones to look out for.

According to The Economy of Everything Home report by Angi, almost 30 million people will turn 80 years old by 2032. Healthier seniors will want to age in place, and a cleaning service can help make that happen. This older age group has no children to support, no daycare expenses, and the mortgage is paid, contributing to their disposable income.

However, it isn’t baby boomers who are a target market for cleaning services. People in their 30s who are trying to balance raising young children while capitalizing on career growth don’t have the time to spend cleaning their homes. What’s more, people in their 40s experience peak career earning power, increasing their disposable income, and inviting the convenience of a cleaning service.

5. Rising Homeownership

The Economy of Everything Home report also noted that single-family homes continue to be the most popular form of housing in the United States. This is an important figure for residential cleaning industry trends because homeowners spend significantly more on home services than renters. As more people purchase homes, they naturally help grow the customer base for a home cleaning service.
